Alice shared her story with us while volunteering at our Denver warehouse. Eight years ago, her husband, an insurance adjuster, fell off a roof and suffered serious permanent injuries including a traumatic brain injury. Suddenly they went from a dual income family to Alice being the sole supporter. “In an instant, everything changed,” Alice tears up. “I had no idea how to pay the medical bills, cover the daily expenses and purchase food.”
A friend took Alice to visit a local food pantry. “I was so scared and humiliated to ask for help,” she shares. “When I got there, I still remember how kind and non-judgmental the pantry staff was. It saved us. I received all sorts of food, including two bags of walnuts. I thought I’d hit the jackpot and was so appreciative to receive help during such a difficult time.”
Alice is still the sole bread winner and while the family manages, she is expecting another rough patch. Her position as a contractor means she won’t be paid while she’s out recovering from an upcoming surgery. Knowing there’s help available through Food Bank of the Rockies and our partner agencies gives Alice peace of mind. “I know I can go to a food pantry and get food,” she says. “I can have a friend take me and we won’t have to worry about going hungry while I’m out of work.”
Your support helps families like Alice’s. Because you care, they have hope and needed nourishment. Thank you!
