Jayci Elaine Derby, a seventh grader from San Antonio, TX is the generationOn Excellence in Service and Leadership Award winner for May 2013. She first became involved in service at the age of 11 when her family went to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery to visit her grandfather’s grave site during the holidays. She noticed only a few wreaths were placed on graves around the cemetery and wondered why there were so few. She decided that all heroes should be honored with a tribute and set out to make that a reality.
After doing some research, Jayci discovered Wreaths Across America, a National organization that places wreaths on graves throughout the country. She became a Youth Ambassador for Wreaths Across America, and started a local organization called Jayci’s Wreaths for Heroes. She has since raised over $15,000 and has spoken at numerous schools and events to raise awareness of her passion to honor heroes while also spreading the message that even one child can make an impact on the world. Congratulations, Jayci!
